In its latest issue of "The Best and Worst of 2008, PEOPLE en Español magazine, which hits newsstands on November 10, picks the most famous celebs who've achieved star of the year status. The cover features Shakira, who is considered our "Humanitarian of the Year" for all of her charity work with impoverished children through her own foundation Pies Descalzos and Latin America in Solidarity (ALAS).
"What's most important how much we can give, it's how," said Shakira in an exclusive interview. "There are people sometimes who help the most just by giving a few words of encouragement, a priceless gesture of love towards a child, which is more valuable than donating money with indifference." The singer learned about poverty early on when her family went bankrupt, and her parents showed her that they were far better off than most families who lived harsh lives and orphans who would whiff gasoline and chemicals to forget their hunger and misery. "We had a comfortable life, and then one day I was shown something else. From that day on, I became obsessed to vindicate my family, my family's economic situation, and to one day help those kids that I saw on the streets," says the singer.
PEOPLE en Español picks the Puerto Rican singer Chayanne as Actor of the Year for his role as a vampire in the miniseries "Gabriel and Mexican star Edith González as Actress of the Year for her upcoming role in the soap Doña Bárbara. "Edith is an icon of Latin American television," says her costar Christian Meier.
Ricky Martin picked up the Father of the Year award for the birth of his twins, while Araceli Arámbula snagged Mother of the Year. Other stars of the year include Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and composer Marco Antonio Solís. Jennni Rivera snags the Indestructible Star of the Year, for facing all of her hardships this year with incredible grace and poise.

En su última edición, que sale a la venta el 10 de noviembre, PEOPLE EN ESPAÑOL presenta una selección de los famosos que se convirtieron en Las Estrellas del Año, en donde se destaca a Shakira por su labor humanitaria en la organización Pies Descalzos y en ALAS, la cual vela por el bienestar de los niños en Latinoamérica.
"Lo importante no es cuánto saquemos de nuestro bolsillo. Lo importante es el cómo", dice la cantante colombiana de 31 años en una entrevista exclusiva con nosotros en la que agrega que "de pronto muchas veces hay gente que ayuda más con una palabra, con un gesto de amor hacia un niño, que aquellas que donan dinero con indiferencia". La barranquillera también nos cuenta detalles íntimos sobre su vida, como cuando su familia pasó por una enorme crisis económica antes de ser famosa y habla de su relación con el argentino Antonio de la Rúa, con quien vive en unión libre desde hace ya varios años, y de su deseo de ser madre.
Asimismo, la edición que está para no perdérsela, destaca a Chayanne como El Actor del Año por su participación en la miniserie Gabriel (MegaTV), en la que le da vida a un seductor y sanguinario vampiro y nos cuenta como se acostumbró a dormir en un ataúd. Edith González es reconocida como La Actriz del Año por su excelente actuación en la telenovela Doña Bárbara (Telemundo); Ricky Martin es El Papá del Año tras el nacimiento de sus gemelitos, y Aracely Arámbula se lleva el premio a La Mamá del Año, quien se encuentra muy feliz por la pronta llegada de su segundo hijo, una niña a la que llamarán Marcela.
Por el lado de la televisión, Alisson Lozz actriz de la telenovela Al diablo con los guapos es catalogada como La Sorpresa del Año, mientras que su compañero de melodrama, Eugenio Siller, es El Galán del Año, y la actriz colombiana Carmen Villalobos de la telenovela Sin senos no hay paraíso (Telemundo), es El Descubrimiento del Año.
En materia de música, los editores eligen al puertorriqueño Luis Fonsi como El Cantante del Año, mientras que Marco Antonio Solís se lleva el honor de ser El Compositor. La mexicana Jenni Rivera es clasificada como La Inquebrantable por la forma en que ha sabido sobrellevar su carrera tras las dificultades que ha sufrido, que incluyen un arresto por golpear a un fan con un micrófono y el robo de un vídeo íntimo.
